The word ‘unusual’ is overworked when it comes to description, but here it applies if you’ve even seen it applied! Jodi Bloom has some very unusual ideas about jewellery and what it says about the wearer. Her collections are not only unique; many of her one or two-of-a-kind items are so unusual they boggle the mind.
For example, her line of medic alert bracelets is certainly an uncommon way of presenting a common sight. An elegant, long black oblong charm with the name of your medical condition (diabetic, penicillin allergy, stroke patient etc.) in equally elegant lettering is the centerpiece of a bead and silver chain that would grace any wearer’s arm. It’s actually quite attractive, and not as startling as some of her other creations.
One example: a gold cameo pin, encircled with rhinestones, with a photograph of soldiers carrying a flag-draped coffin, all the faces blacked out with the blatant slash of a marker – exactly as it appears in a photo released to the press.
Jodi says that she is fascinated by classified documents – not so unusual, but not often seen as costume jewellery. Some of her rings, pendants, bracelets and other items are bizarre, some charmingly simple and childlike, but they all have a sort of unexpected quirkiness that is going to be irresistible to some people and downright freaky to others.
Pandora is usually known for their perfect-for-any-occasion charms and charm bracelets, so I was surprised to find a ring in the collection. This is just adorable. The Pandora Ring is 14k yellow gold with a Blue Topaz flower center. Too cute? I say no such thing.
